14 Thoughtful Gifts for Cobblers
Cobbler. Shoe maker. Guy who saves shoes that everyone else threw away three years ago. You bring shoe that dog ate, sole fell off, heel gone, you say can you fix. He looks at it like doctor looks at patient that should be dead but isn't. And he says yeah. He always says yeah, even when shoe is… I mean, it's done. It's done done. But he fixes. So buying for him – you can't get socks. He sees socks all day, takes them off, looks at what socks tried to protect and failed.
Shoe Last
Wooden foot, shaped like foot that never complains. You put shoe on it, hammer, glue, shoe keeps shape. Why take this? Because without last shoe collapses like my motivation on Monday morning. Uh, you try to fix sole without last, shoe moves, glue goes everywhere, now shoe glued to table. Last holds. Makes shoe stay still while you yell at it. If you want one thing that stops shoe from fighting you, this might quietly be it.
Cobbler Hammer
Small, heavy head, magnet holds nail so fingers safe. I mean, you hold tiny nail near shoe that costs more than your car payment, you hit fingers, you bleed on leather. That's… oh no. Hammer with magnet holds nail, you tap, nail in, fingers still fingers. Why take? Because hitting fingers with hammer makes you hate job you love, and then you hate shoe, and shoe did nothing wrong, owner did.
Leather Stitching Awl
Pushes through thick leather that doesn't want hole. You push, twist, thread follows. Without awl you push needle and needle bends like it gave up on life, which I get. Awl doesn't give up. On list because sole stitching without awl is like trying to sew tire with toothpick. Makes thick leather feel like it actually wants to be sewn, which it doesn't, but awl convinces it.
Shoe Glue Contact Cement
Not super glue that sticks fingers together and now you have shoe stuck to hand. Real cobbler glue, strong, flexible, smells like it will kill brain cells but works. Why take? Because sole that peels off after two days means customer comes back angry, and angry customer with broken shoe is person you don't want to see again. Glue that holds means they don't come back – well, they come back, but not angry. Big difference.
Shoe Anvil
Little iron foot you put inside shoe to hammer on. Oh man, without it you hammer shoe on table and table dents and wife yells. Anvil takes hit. On list because hammering on air does nothing, you need something hard inside shoe that says nope, stay. Makes hammering feel like hammering, not like hitting pillow that is shoe. I was thinking – we all need anvil inside, something hard that holds us when life hammers.
Edge Iron
Heats, you rub edge, edge smooth, shiny, looks like new shoe that costs 400 bucks. Without it edge rough, hairy, like you cut leather with teeth. Why take? Because edge is what people see when they look down at shoe and think, uh, did someone make this or did dog make this. Iron makes edge look like someone who cares made it. Makes cheap repair look expensive, which is whole trick.
Heel Nails
Tiny nails, brass, for heel that keeps falling off because owner walks like he hates heels. You nail, heel stays. On list because heel that falls off in middle of street is how you lose customer forever, and also how customer falls and then blames you. Nails that hold heel hold reputation. Small nails, big fear – fear that heel will pop off while guy is on date. You don't want to be reason date fails.
Leather Edge Paint
Paint for edge, black, brown, you brush, edge covered, looks finished. I once painted edge with marker, looked okay for 5 minutes then marker faded like my New Year's resolutions. This paint stays. Why take? Because painted edge hides sins, like you cut little crooked but paint covers, and now no one knows. Makes mistake not look like mistake, which in shoe repair is half the job, hiding that shoe was dead.
Shoemaker Apron
Thick canvas, pockets for awl, hammer, glue that leaks no matter what you do. Without apron glue on shirt, shirt ruined, wife says why do you have glue on good shirt, you say because life. Apron catches glue. On list because… look, you need place to put tools that are always in hand and then lost in pile of leather that eats tools. Apron keeps tools on you, not lost in pile that smells like old shoes and regret.
Brannock Device
Metal foot measurer, you step, size shows. People think they are size 9, they are size 11 and wonder why shoes hurt. This proves truth. Why take? Because half repairs happen because people wear wrong size for 20 years and then blame shoe. Device says, uh, no, you are 11, not 9, stop lying to your feet. Makes telling someone they were wrong about their own feet for 20 years easier when shiny device says it, not just you.
Leather Conditioner
Balm, you rub, leather soft, smells like new car that you can't afford. Old leather dry, cracks, looks like desert that is also shoe. Conditioner brings back. On list because dry leather breaks again after you fixed it, and then customer thinks you fixed bad. You didn't, leather was just dry and angry. Conditioner makes leather less angry. Less angry leather lasts longer, like less angry people, actually.
Buffing Wheel
For drill, spins, polishes shoe to shine that you can see face in. You buff, shoe shines, customer goes oh wow, like you made new shoe out of dead shoe. Why take? Because shine is what sells. You can fix sole perfect but if shoe not shiny, customer says meh. Shine makes meh into wow. Makes dead shoe look alive, which is creepy but also beautiful, like you brought shoe back from dead and now shoe is shiny zombie.
Welt Brush
Little brush, stiff, cleans welt where dirt lives and breeds. Dirt in welt makes new stitch not hold, like trying to glue two things that have sand between. Brush cleans. On list because… I mean, welt is tiny groove that holds dirt from 5 years of walking through God knows what, and if you don't clean, repair fails and you think you failed but really dirt failed you. Brush removes dirt, removes fear that repair won't hold.
Shoe Shine Kit
Box with polish, brushes, cloth, everything for shine that is not just for show, shine protects leather. Unexpected but directed. Why take? Because after repair shoe needs shine to hide that it was repaired, like makeup after bad night. Kit makes shoe look like it never died. Makes customer feel like they got new shoes for price of repair, which makes them come back with more dead shoes. Cycle continues, you have job forever.
